WBR Celebrates 1M Bicycles
World Bicycle Relief and Giant Group have reached a major milestone in their partnership, celebrating the production of their one-millionth Buffalo Bicycle on October 16, 2026. The milestone was marked at Giant's manufacturing facility in Tianjin, China, recognizing a collaboration that began in 2010 to expand access to reliable transportation in underserved communities around the world.
The Buffalo Bicycle is designed specifically for demanding conditions, with a durable frame and components built to handle rough roads, heavy loads, and daily use. Unlike conventional recreational bicycles, these utility bikes are intended to serve as practical transportation, helping students travel to school, healthcare workers reach patients, and families access markets and other essential services.
The partnership combines World Bicycle Relief's humanitarian mission and product requirements with Giant Group's bicycle engineering, manufacturing expertise, and global supply chain. Together, the organizations have developed a way to produce purpose-built bicycles at scale, supporting programs that address transportation barriers in rural communities. World Bicycle Relief also operates Buffalo Bicycle as a for-profit subsidiary, with profits from bicycle sales helping fund the nonprofit's broader humanitarian work.
Reaching one million bicycles represents a significant achievement for both organizations and highlights the potential of cycling to improve access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. The milestone also demonstrates how collaboration between the bicycle industry and humanitarian organizations can turn manufacturing expertise into practical solutions for communities where reliable transportation can make a lasting difference.
